UPGRADE PROCESS

Back To Upgrade Main

This page is designed to help you with the Upgrade Process. Ugrading to a higher grade requires:

  • Experience at various age and competition levels
  • (See See Referee Administrative Handbook)
  • Fitness
  • (See Fitness Test Schedule)
  • Pass a Written Test on The Laws Of The Game
  • (See Written Test Options)
  • Attendance at Advanced Referee Clinic (See Course Schedule and search for Advanced/Upgrade Clinics)
  • Performance evaluated through assessments (Request An Assessment)
  • Upgrade Process

The process itself is designed to be self-driven. Make sure to review the Advanced Grade Requirements and familiarize yourself with these requirements. Use the Upgrade Form to help document your progress. This form will become part of your completed package

All of the requirements must be met within a twelve-month period, but the order in which you accomplish them is unimportant. Most referees will have already accumulated the required number of games before starting the process. Remember that game experience is a minimum guideline, and that many referees do not feel really comfortable and confident until they have officiated a significantly higher number of matches.

At the end of the twelve months, or whenever you have completed the requirements, you will need to submit an "upgrade package" in order to make your request official. This package includes your game log, and documentation of your successfully passing all of the steps for the grade you seek. Before sending this paperwork, however, contact should be made with the SRA. IMPORTANT - make sure to make a copy of all of your information before you send it in. You will want to have this for future reference, or in case your package gets lost!

The MSRC reviews the documentation and either approves or disapproves the upgrade request. You are usually notified within two weeks. Upon approval the referee's grade is immediately changed and your new grade is reflected in our database. Note that USSF may not reflect your new grade until the next registration cycle.

Remember that is ultimately up to you to complete the process. If you have any questions along the way, do not sit idly waiting for the phone to ring. Let us know and we will do our best to assist.
